ANSWER

Health experts and multiple studies have linked acetaminophen, which is the active ingredient in Tylenol, to an increased risk of liver failure.

Acetaminophen overdose is a leading cause of liver failure in the United States, according to the FDA, and many of these problems may have been prevented if adequate warnings had been provided about the risk of liver failure and symptoms of liver damage.

One of the biggest problems is that many people assume Tylenol and other acetaminophen products are safe and do not properly recognize potential signs of liver failure from Tylenol, continuing to overdose on acetaminophen in an attempt to treat the symptoms.

Acetaminophen is widely used in a number of prescription and over-the-counter medications, and many consumers do not even realize that they are taking too much acetaminophen or how many medications contain the ingredient.

This can lead to small overdoses over time, which can be just as dangerous as one large overdose, because the symptoms are not associated with receiving too much Tylenol.

Symptoms of liver failure from Tylenol or acetaminophen may include:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Confusion and Disorientation
  • Excessive Drowsiness
  • Jaundice
  • Nausea and Vomiting

An estimated 50,000 people in the U.S. each year visit emergency rooms due to acetaminophen side effects. There are about 25,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths linked to the drug annually.

In severe cases, the liver suffers so much damage that the patient experiences liver failure and may die if they do not receive a liver transplant.

After my Nutritionist ran some blood work at his clinic because of me gaining wait and not feeling well. He recommended me to go see my Primary Doctor who has been ignoring my Fatty Liver which she was aware I had by blood work, she didn’t feel that I should have a biopsy done. I went to lab and had blood work done and showed the same results. She sent me to get an Upper GI and I woke up screaming and they rush me to the nearest hospital to have it checked out. They ran an MRI immediately and showed that I have NASH disease, but she blurted out Cyrosis of the Liver. My Mom, Wife and Daughter were there and they were all very shock as well as I when to said that to us. I went to the Mayo Clinic on July 1, 2015. And the Doctor stated with my health it is a miracle that I even could walk and I should have been dead 4 months ago. Several years ago, I was taking Extra strength Tylenol for bad Migraines I was having at the time. Since I was not a drinker and I did not have Hepatites even though the Red Cross said that I did have Hep B and the Doctor said I never had according to her blood work.. After a few months they have recommended me to go on the transplant list for a partial liver. I have decided with all the running I had to do I am currently on the list at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.
