A pulmonary embolism is the sudden blockage of an artery which brings blood into the lungs.  Typically, this blood clot does not form in the lung artery, but somewhere else in the body.  If a clot breaks off it can travel through the blood stream and get lodged near the lung causing a pulmonary embolism.

The pulmonary artery is the main intake valve of blood into the lungs.  If this artery is blocked, the lung begins to suffocate, lacking oxygen rich blood that is required.  The lungs are the main organ in the respiratory system, and when they are shut down or hindered in any way, the body suffers from a lack of oxygen.

SYMPTOMS OF PULMONARY EMBOLISM

Pulmonary embolism symptoms could include:

  • chest pain (similar to that of a heart attack)
  • difficulty breathing
  • increased sweating
  • anxiety or increased heart rate
  • fainting
  • coughing which produces blood

CAUSES OF PULMONARY EMBOLISM

The primary cause of a pulmonary embolism is deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  Deep vein thrombosis is a large clot that forms in the legs or the arms.  If these blood clots break loose, they can travel through the blood stream to the lungs.  Causes of deep vein thrombosis include:

  • trauma
  • surgery
  • sitting for long periods of time (such as on long flights)
  • medication side effects which increase risk of blood clots

PULMONARY EMBOLISM MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS

Several medical products could increase the risk of pulmonary embolism from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) including:
