Forceps are occasionally used during birth to ease the delivery or to help the baby come out. However, if the proper standard of care is not followed, a birth injury from forceps may be suffered by the child, resulting in nerve damage, brain damage or cerebral palsy.

The malpractice lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. investigate forceps birth injury lawsuits for children born with a brain trauma, nerve damage or other injuries caused by incorrect or inappropriate use of forceps during delivery. Request a free case evaluation.

FORCEPS DELIVERY COMPLICATIONS AND BIRTH RISKS

Forceps are metal instruments that appear similar to salad tongs.  They have two rounded cups on each end, which are used to fit around the baby’s head.  If forcep delivery is unsuccessful in bringing the baby out, a cesarean (c-section) is usually performed.

Forceps may be medically indicated when the:

  • Baby is in fetal distress
  • Baby is abnormally positioned
  • Mother is having difficulty pushing

The improper use of forceps can result in nerve damage to the side of the baby’s face when a doctor fails to follow the proper standards of medical care.

Facial nerve trauma from forceps will be more noticeable when the baby cries.  If the face appears uneven or asymmetrical, there may be permanent nerve damage.

Inappropriate use of forceps during the delivery could also result in trauma to the baby’s head.  If a brain injury is sustained as a result of this trauma to the head, the child may suffer from cerebral palsy, which can impact movement control and muscle coordination.
